Numerous worldwide studies have shown that there is a high incidence rate for musculoskeletal disorders among dentists, dental hygienists and dental students. A systematic review of data suggested that the prevalence of general musculoskeletal pain ranges between 64% and 95%. The most prevalent regions for pain in dentists were the back and neck, while the hand and wrist regions were the most prevalent regions for dental hygienists. Studies have also shown that one of the most frequent causes of premature retirement among dentists is musculoskeletal disorders.

This course will teach you how to identify the risk factors, as well as the signs and symptoms of common musculoskeletal disorders that occur among dental professionals. Ergonomic strategies on how to minimize pain and discomfort, as well as stretching and strengthening exercises will be discussed. Participants will be able to incorporate the information learned from this course into their daily practice.

Learning Objectives:
• To identify the risk factors associated with musculoskeletal disorders among dental professionals
• To identify the most common musculoskeletal disorders that affect dental professionals
• To demonstrate and describe proper postures, techniques and practices that will minimize the chance to develop musculoskeletal disorders
