CSPD Foundation's Third Year News and Articles: 2003-2004Fall 2004 President's Message
As you read this letter, you will have already received and thoroughly digested my annual letter of thanks to the more than 50% of CSPD members who have already supported the CSPD Foundation Annual Giving Campaign in the last three years, and asking every member to now join in this effort, so crucial to the future of pediatric dentistry in California. The looming crisis in pediatric dental education will affect the private practice of our specialty and the way general dentists view the treatment of children in their practices; it has dire implications in relationship to access to care for so many of California’s kids in the years to come. The solution to this problem is by no means clear, but it is abundantly clear that we must all continue to devote our creative energy and some of our dollars to searching for ways to bring more of our best and brightest into the ranks of educators,at all level The Foundation Board is committed to building a war chest as quickly as possible while implementing a variety of programs, which will enhance and improve the existing educational programs in our state, but it all depends on each of you. Please put your check in the mail soon. It is an investment in our profession’s future, which we must all make together. If you are already an Annual Giver, consider whether this might not be the year to increase your donor level. In April, during the Annual Meeting in Monterey, we will be holding a wonderful reception for all members of the Presidents’ Circle. Why not join your colleagues by making a commitment at this level and look for your invitation to this event. We’ll be enjoying great appetizers and sampling terrific local wines at the unique "Taste of Monterey." Also, look for an announcement of the third, Thursday afternoon program, at the Annual Meeting, which will further empower those in teaching and encourage others to explore sharing some of their experience and knowledge at one of the dental schools. Thanks for your input and continued support! Mark Lisagor, DDS
Summer 2004 President's Message
The Foundation is continuing to accumulate a "war chest" as quickly as possible to begin taking meaningfully steps in California to improve the picture of pediatric dental education for the years to come. Those of you who have supported the Foundation by contributing to its annual giving campaign will appreciate the effort that the Board of Trustees has made to see to it that your donations are invested wisely and spent well. We are doing our best to keep you informed of our mission and strategic plan as it continues to evolve and grow. The board is continuing to encourage applications for our Internal Faculty Development Grant Program. Targeted at graduate students and faculty, significant funding is available to support innovative projects, which enhance the mentoring relationship between faculty and students, also between senior and junior faculty. We will launch our 4th Annual Giving Campaign in the fall and are making all the preparations to insure that it will once again be a success, with even more CSPD members joining our ranks. The planning for a continuing education course in conjunction with the Annual Meeting in Monterey is once again well under way. A special appreciation event for Presidents’ Circle members is also on the drawing board for the Monterey meeting. Thank you for your continued trust and support. Have a great summer. Spring 2004 President's MessageBeginning its fourth year in existence, the Foundation is leaving its infancy behind and is now a full-fledged toddler. Toddlers are eager to grow and explore options and enter a period of accelerated learning, and this toddler is no exception. With time comes clarity. The Trustees have become clearer in their resolve to focus on the crisis in education in pediatric dentistry and also more confident in the mission of the Foundation and the short and long term goals to be implemented through its strategic plan. We understand that the difficulty in attracting an adequate number of pediatric dentists to careers in academe, and of retaining that faculty already in place, is often related to basic economics. The disparity between private practice and teaching income potentials has never been greater. We also understand that one very important deterrent to choosing the academic life for a pediatric dental resident may be the challenge that must be confronted in dealing with significant student loans, sometimes approaching $200,000 or more, accumulated through the many years of undergraduate, dental school and specialty training. We have learned that the academic model, in which our universities are so deeply entrenched, makes advancement very challenging for people in clinical positions. We have also learned that there is much that can be done within our programs to foster and encourage this process for those who wish to advance, both part and full time faculty. The members of CSPD have shown that they understand that this problem is one we all share, that we jointly own responsibility to address the crisis, and that money is a large part of the solution. This year's Annual Giving Campaign yielded the highest number of donors from CSPD's ranks, as well as the highest dollar total, surpassing even our inaugural year. The Trustees are committed to building the largest war chest possible in the shortest time possible, so that we can offer meaningful options to those wishing to pursue careers in academe, such as loan forgiveness programs in exchange for academic service. While we work toward these long-range goals, we will continue to find creative ways to enhance the teaching and learning experience at all levels in pediatric dental education in California. Programs such as our very well attended presentation on mentoring at the Annual Meeting, the various development grants which we have funded, and support of various student groups throughout the state - all these and more will keep us all focused on the crisis in the years to come. If you have yet to become a contributor to our annual giving campaign, we hope you will join us along with our current donors, and continue to support this important effort every year! In friendship, CSPDF Makes Another Internal Faculty Development GrantThe Foundation Board of Trustees recently approved another project for the Internal Faculty Development Grant Program. In its second year, this Foundation program makes grants for projects that seek to provide the resources necessary to identify and mentor dental students and pediatric dental residents who have the potential and the interest to pursue careers in academe. The most recent project approved for funding comes from the University of California San Francisco and will be administered by pediatric dental resident, Dr. Ann Tornabene, and her faculty advisor, Dr. Ken Troutman. They will organize and implement a mentorship program in which students are matched with professors that are mutually identified. One part of their program will result in the development of predoctoral lectures by the students/residents, which may be used later for teaching purposes and another part of their plan includes providing opportunities for all the mentors and students to meet and share their experiences. This one-on-one pairing will not only expose promising future educators to positive and realistic academic experiences but also establish special mentoring relationships between teachers and students/residents that may ultimately encourage the mentees to pursue a career as an educator. The Foundation continues to accept proposals to the Internal Faculty Development Grant Program. Please contact Program Chair, Gila Dorostkar, for further information and download the RFP application from the CSPD Foundation link on this web page. Dr. Paula O'Neill Presents Blueprint for Mentoring at CSPD Foundation ProgramFinding innovative ways to support existing pediatric dental faculty and encourage more professionals to join the academic ranks remains a primary focus of the CSPD Foundation. This year the Foundation presented Dr. Paula O'Neill to a large audience of pediatric dental residents, academicians and clinicians at the CSPD Annual Meeting in Torrey Pines. Dr. O'Neill, a renowned expert in the field of mentoring from the University of Texas, Dental Branch at Houston, reviewed major issues that have led to the current crisis in dental education. Of critical significance are dwindling financial resources from governmental agencies and the escalating burden of tuition and debt for the average dental student. In addition, faculty retention and recruitment suffers from the income disparity between academic and private practice positions. Evidence-based research described by Dr. O'Neill found that mentoring has a favorable impact on attracting and retaining faculty. The mentor as a role model encourages proactive collegiality and reduces toxic behaviors that can turn professionals away from academia. Long term mentoring relationships of up to seven years can be very beneficial, offering stability and support to careers, while helping new faculty gain understanding of the institution's goals and objectives. Dr. O'Neill described in detail the successful Mentoring Program she created at her institution, including methods for gaining support from existing faculty and administration. From a private practitioner's point of view, according to Dr. O'Neill, mentoring strategies provide an excellent means to improve efficiency in the practice, nurture new associates and staff members, as well as mentoring individuals who may be interested in pediatric dentistry. Ultimately faculty members and private practitioners have one common goal which Dr. O'Neill identified - preservation of the pediatric dental profession by having a competent and committed replacement for themselves when it is time to seek another challenge in life. Mentoring, a cooperative rather than competitive paradigm, enables that goal. Impromptu Auction Raises $5,000 for FoundationA few kind offers to donate some very special auction items followed by a group of enthusiastic bidders was the winning combination at the CSPD Annual Session "Night at the Races" Party, adding an entertaining spark to an already fun evening and raising more than $5,000 toward the Foundation's fundraising efforts. Box Seats and Dinner at the Hollywood Bowl (Mark Lisagor), prime tickets for Giants games during the AAPD meeting (Neil Katsura), a one week stay in a beachfront hideaway in Mission Bay (Ron Bills) and tickets to the Pageant of the Masters (Ron French) were all energetically grabbed up by winning bidders John DeLorme, Ray Stewart, Andy Soderstrom, Lonnie Lovingier, Rolf Spamer, Dennis Nutter and Dick Mungo and Ken Szymanski (who bought some Giants tickets, then donated them back to be sold again!) The Foundation presents a special program in conjunction with the CSPD 2004 Annual Meeting The CSPD Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to invite you to a special program in conjunction with the CSPD 2004 Annual Meeting in La Jolla on The Art & Science of Mentoring in Pediatric Dentistry. The speaker will be Paula N. O'Neill, M.Ed., Ed.D., Professor, Department of Dental Public Health, Office of Professional Development, Special Assistant to the Dean, The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston. This interactive program is designed to present information regarding the creation of a culture of mentoring for those interested in mentoring in the academic and private practice environment. Guiding principles of mentoring such as engendering trust, giving the mentee a voice, suspending the mentor's agenda, and emphasizing positive movement will be discussed. The challenges and benefits of mentoring dental faculty and private practice dentists will be presented within the context of the organization in which they work. There are numerous definitions of mentoring and well as a number of approaches to mentoring, many of which will be presented and discussed. Winter 2004 President’s Message"It's less than three years old and already doing amazing things!" If this sounds like a pronouncement from the proud parents of one of your young patients, I suspect it is because all of us involved with the development of the CSPD Foundation are feeling a bit proud of our baby and all that has already been accomplished, even in its infancy. Thanks to the response from CSPD members in support of our annual giving campaigns, the Foundation is continuing to build a growing corpus of funds, a very important aspect of our strategic plan especially in these early years. Along the way, we are in our second cycle of awarding grants in support of innovative projects aimed at mentoring and encouraging students, residents and young practitioners to consider careers in teaching (see Dr. Gila Dorostkar’s report). Student groups are also being supported and encouraged by Foundation funding at all five dental schools. Policies and procedures continue to be developed to insure that we manage and administer funds appropriately and that we accept outside funds from other organizations only within carefully delineated guidelines. At the time of this writing, nearly half of CSPD members have yet to send in their annual contributions to the Foundation. Please send your check in soon so you too can share in the pride we all feel in "our baby!" - Dr. Mark Lisagor CSPDF Allocations UpdateBy Dr. Gila Dorostkar The CSPD Foundation Board has already approved funding for two proposals this year for the Internal Faculty Development Grant Program. (This Program is designed to enhance the quality of the teaching experience for our pediatric educators, providing them with the resources necessary to identify and mentor those dental students and pediatric dental residents who have the potential and the interest to consider careers in academe.) Awards this year include:
The Foundation Board is continuing to look for more projects and has extended the deadline for RFP submissions. For faculty interested in having their residents accompany them to the CSPD Foundation presentation, "The Art and Science of Mentoring," consideration would also be given for proposals to support the costs associated with the attendance of residents to this particularly relevant program. Please contact Gila Dorostkar (giladorostkar@aol.com) for information regarding the Program. The RFP and application is also downloadable from the CSPD website, in the CSPD Foundation section.
