CSPD Foundation's Sixth Year News and Articles: 2006-2007
CSPD Foundation President

Fall 2006

President's Message

Richard Sobel, D.D.S.

As most of you are aware, the Foundation has chosen to focus its resources on one topic - the critical need for more dental educators in California, in both undergraduate departments and our postdoctoral programs. Collaborative and creative leadership in academia and in AAPD will be required for solutions beyond our resources, however, we have made an impact. We provided funding for grants to postdoctoral students who have accepted part-time academic positions and stimulated a couple of young pediatric dentists who have received full-time appointments in our dental schools. We granted partial funding for a consensus conference, which brought together faculty from a variety of venues at USC and their outlying clinics to help standardize instruction techniques. We have also instituted a Challenge Grant available to all California dental schools to partially fund the endowment of chairs in Pediatric Dentistry departments.

We have just initiated two grant programs, which we anticipate will have a specific and more immediate impact. These new grants are a Faculty Development Grant for Part-Time Educators and an Investigator-Initiated Research Grant. Please read more detail about each of these in the accompanying article.

We have recently made available avenues for donor-directed projects. These will provide support for individual programs of interest to a specific contributor. We are open to your suggestions. These might include specific research or educational projects, pilot postdoctoral student clinical care programs, on-line CE education, the CSPD Research Award, the Warren Brandli Leadership Internship or support for the student groups at our dental schools. If you have any ideas, and I am sure that you do, please contact me or any other Trustee for recommendations on how to proceed with your proposal. We would love to see a project in your name.

We are currently planning our third strategic planning session this coming January to reexamine our mission and formulate goals for the next three to five years. A committee of your peers is preparing a creative and engaging meeting plan. Dr. William Cordeiro, who is a facilitator with extensive experience working with a variety of professional and educational groups, will be guiding our session.

We are pleased by the number of detailed responses and comments received from the foundation-related questions in the recent CSPD member questionnaire. We ask that you think about what the Foundation can do for you as a member of CSPD and provide us with your additional opinions and suggestions. This is especially valuable as we move into this period of future planning.

As always, we appreciate your support. We are in need of additional volunteer committee members to help with the organizational and evaluative portions of our expanded grants and award categories. Please do not hesitate to ask how you may be of help to us.

We look forward to your response to our current, sixth annual, contribution campaign. Remember, a greater participation by our members in the Foundation enables us to pursue outside funding for our new and larger grant programs. Thank you for your ongoing generous support for our Foundation.

Foundation Launches 6th Annual Giving Campaign

Mark Lisagor, DDS

CSPD Foundation Member

CSPD members will soon receive the appeal for their support of the CSPD Foundation’s 2006-2007 Annual Giving Campaign. Last year’s campaign resulted in more than $132,000 in donations from nearly 50% of active CSPD members; this was the most successful campaign to date and has allowed the Foundation to actively fund programs that fulfill the Foundation’s mission while building a larger corpus of funds to expand our reach in program and grant funding. The corpus is now at the half million-dollar level and growing.

This level of participation is virtually unheard of from the membership of any other affiliated organizations in dentistry, where a much smaller level of participation is considered successful. CSPD members appreciate the care with which the Foundation Board manages these funds and they understand the pivotal role that the Foundation plays in addressing the crisis in pediatric dental education in California.

Two innovative grant programs have recently been approved by the CSPD Foundation Board, along with a challenge grant to encourage the development of endowed chairs in pediatric dentistry throughout the state.

The Board will hold its strategic planning exercise in January, 2007 to re-evaluate goals and chart its course for the next few years. If you have any comments or suggestions for your Foundation, contact any of the Board members.

Without the continuing support of each and every CSPD member through contributions to this annual campaign, the Foundation would not be able to continue with the efforts to achieve its goals.

If you haven’t contributed in the past, please consider joining your colleagues by donating to the Foundation this year. If you have been a donor in prior years, the board encourages you to consider increasing the level of your support, perhaps joining the 56 colleagues who have already become Presidents’ Circle Life Members.

CSPD Foundation President

Summer 2006

President's Message

Richard Sobel, D.D.S.

The CSPD Foundation leads the pack. For over 5 years our Foundation has made small, but continuing steps to solve some of the educational deficiencies in the pediatric departments of our dental schools. Recently these challenges to our undergraduate and specialty programs have been recognized by other organizations. Programs or projects to address these problems are beginning to develop from both the AAPD and CDA Foundations.

We have provided undergraduate pediatric student study group support, funded CE projects directed toward mentoring and/or educational skills, funded grants for projects and presentations by postdoctoral students and aided mentoring programs for those students considering academic careers. We are continuing on some of these early paths while expanding to provide more significant support for those seeking to contribute to pediatric dental education.

Our Board has again initiated the funding of grants to aid research presentations for postdoctoral students and now faculty members. Requests for proposals have been sent to each pediatric dental department and postdoctoral program. Look for a listing of those funded in our next CSPD Bulletin.

At this time we are also finalizing the criteria and applications for two new categories of substantially larger grants to aid educators. These include a Faculty Development Grant for Part-Time Dental Educators and an Investigator-Initiated Research Grant. To enable us to award multiple grants in these categories, we are seeking funding outside of our member donor contributions.

The Foundation is proud to announce the funding of the CSPD Warren Brandli Leadership Internship. This is a project to stimulate young or newer pediatric dentists to participate more fully in the organizational activities of our specialty. It will provide an introduction to the goals, structure and function of CSPD and allows access to CSPD Board and committee meetings. A Board member will function as a mentor to help guide this intern and encourage other activities within our state specialty group. Last year Ann Torneborne was the recipient of funds for a pilot leadership intern project and now, upon the completion of her pediatric dental training, she is participating in CSPD committees and as a Board member of the Western District of the AAPD.

Two other granting areas have recently become available. We are now prepared to receive Donor Directed Funds for any educational or research related project. One of these, from Santos Cortez, helped us initiate the Leadership Internship. Please present your ideas to me, or any other trustee, for advice on how to proceed with your proposal.

Another new program is a Challenge Grant. It has been proposed for any pediatric dental alumni or support group to fund a faculty position within any California dental school. Please read more details in the announcement on these pages.

Again, I ask for your support. We are in need of committee members to help with the organizational and evaluative portion of our grants and awards. We value your opinion, advice and aid. We look forward to your thoughts regarding our future direction and your contacts for increased financial support for our programs.

As always, we appreciate your contributions to our Funding Campaign and we thank you for your current and past generous support for our Foundation.

Foundation Announces Endowed Chair Challenge Grant Program

Mark Lisagor, DDS

The Foundation is continuing its mission of addressing the critical shortage of full and part time faculty. The CSPD Foundation Board has announced a new Challenge Grant Program. This program is designed to encourage alumni and friends of all the pediatric dental programs in California to consider making contributions to an endowed chair. These Fund-raising campaigns in pediatric dentistry will provide a margin of excellence in attracting and retaining faculty for years to come.

At each of the state’s dental schools, perpetual funds may be set up to create endowed chairs in pediatric dentistry. The funds realized from these endowments are then used to perpetually support and enhance a full time faculty position, making a career in academics more attractive to a potential or continuing faculty person. This can make a major difference for someone interested in pursuing a career in academe, but challenged by the high cost of living in the urban centers.

The Foundation will support any successful endowed chair campaign with a 10% challenge grant of up to $100,000 for any of the five dental schools, which complete a successful fund-raising campaign. Currently, endowments are possible at either the $500,000 or $1,000,000 levels and higher, depending on the school.

The development staffs at the various dental schools are all willing and eager to support interested alumni in creating appropriate campaigns. The CSPD Foundation Board believes this to be a significant way to enhance pediatric dental education in the state and can be an excellent way for alumni to give back to the programs, which provided them the training for their careers.

Interested members of CSPD should contact the development staff at the dental schools or members of the CSPD Foundation Board.

CSPD Foundation President

Spring 2006

President's Message

Richard Sobel, D.D.S.

Our CSPD Foundation has just presented its fourth Continuing Education program designed to facilitate the participation of our members in pediatric dental education. Robin Wright’s program, "Powerful communication for the Pediatric Dental Educator and Clinician" had something in it for everyone, the practitioner, educator and postdoctoral student. All of us can use the messages and skills so enthusiastically and clearly delineated during her presentation. We were especially pleased by the large attendance and the presence of 33 postdoctoral students at her program.

Our Foundation has a broad mission, however it became readily obvious to Dave Good and our early Board members that we would have to prioritize our goals in order to be successful. The crisis in pediatric dental education with inadequate faculty and financial support was apparent at every dental school in California. We initially took small steps by supporting student groups and mentoring projects. We then broadened our support for projects which had educational benefits and which stimulated our postdoctoral students to consider careers in which they would participate in academic endeavors. We had some early successes with new faculty at UOP (Mary Lee) and UCSF (Tami Fujino) as well as young, existing faculty members at USC (José Polido) and UCLA (Clarice Law), all who have received support for their projects. Ann Tornabene, of UCSF, has recently completed her year as CSPD’s first Leadership Intern, also funded by our Foundation. Ann will be appointed to CSPD committees and is including part-time teaching at UOP upon her graduation in June.

At our first strategic planning session, in 2003, it was clear that by focusing on the problems in education we would have to forego funding projects in many other deserving areas of pediatric dentistry. These included patient-care oriented programs and those we determined were too extensive for our organization. We believe we took the most appropriate initial direction, given the resources available to us.

Steve Blain has recently reorganized our grants and awards projects, restating the proposal requirements and clarifying our expectations when funded. We are currently creating organizational guidelines for specific faculty development grants for part-time educators, designed to teach practitioners the skills and techniques useful with both undergraduate and postdoctoral students. These will be far more substantial in size than our previous grants and we are about to begin pursuing outside financial support.

Our Foundation is also looking forward to our second strategic planning session, next January, to help guide us in the coming years. To this end, I shall be meeting personally with some of you to listen to your ideas and suggestions for the future direction of our Foundation. Please contact me, or any other Board member, with your thoughts and concerns regarding these issues.

At CSPD’s Past Presidents’ Breakfast and at our own Presidents’ Circle Donor Reception I was pleased to see so many Life Members of our Foundation. That level of ongoing commitment ensures our continuing ability to consider and support worthwhile projects. It also allows us, at this time, to begin receiving the contribution of specific donor directed funds to support projects, which are of special value and interest to you, but may not fall within our current goals or funding abilities. Thank you, Roland Hansen, for leading the way with your contribution so that we could fund the CSPD online education project last year.

I would like to thank our retiring Board members, Gila Dorostkar and Santos Cortez. Gila has contributed since 2002 as a very dedicated and competent leader, often taking on the most difficult and largest tasks facing our Board. Santos brought the perspective of new ideas and helped clarify our working relationship with CSPD. We expect many further successes from both of them as they move on to other endeavors. I also look forward to our newest Board member, Wayne Grossman, who is known for his many years of service at CSPD. Please see the accompanying article regarding his past contributions and our expectations for him. Also joining us is Rick Udin, CSPD’s new president elect.

Lastly, please support us in this year’s campaign, if you have not already done so. We thank all of you who have already contributed to our Foundation. Only by demonstrating the overwhelming contributions of our members can we seek outside funding for our new and larger projects.

Our goals for this year include:
  1. Presenting a continuing education program to further stimulate academic involvement through the use of communication skills appropriate both in teaching and within our practices.
  2. Proposing and funding enhanced categories of projects that will lead to closer mentoring experiences and greater educational preparation for those considering or participating in academic positions.
  3. Increasing the detail of information conveyed to CSPD members about our activities by providing more complete listing of our projects, their participants and funding. This information is presented on the Foundation pages of the CSPD Bulletin and CSPD website.
  4. Increasing the percentage of CSPD members who contribute to our foundation, so as to support our application for financing outside of our membership base.
  5. Improving the structure and functioning of our Board of Trustees and Committees so as to work more efficiently and thoroughly thereby preparing ourselves for the more complex projects which we are currently considering.
  6. Preparing for a Strategic Planning Meeting in mid 2006 to review our accomplishments and plan our direction and activities for the next few years.

President’s Circle Donor Reception at Indian Wells

Members of the CSPD Foundation President’s Circle and special guests were honored at a reception in the Garden Terrace of the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in Indian Wells. Dr. Richard Sobel, President of the Foundation, thanked all the donors for their continuing support and expressed special appreciation to Life Members who had completed their pledges. Retiring Board of Trustees member Dr. Gila Dorostkar was recognized for her years of service to the Foundation as Chair of the Allocations Committee. The reception was arranged by Dr. Scott Fishman and was fully underwritten through the generosity of an anonymous donor.

Wayne Grossman - New Foundation Board Member
Dr. Wayne Grossman

The CSPD Foundation welcomes Wayne Grossman as a new Board member. Wayne is a Past President of CSPD, completing his term in 2000. He served for Ten-years on the CSPD Board holding every officer position except that of editor and website editor.

During his term Wayne was a strong advocate of the Foundation and was instrumental in promoting activities to ameliorate access to care problems and workforce deficiencies in pediatric dentistry. Wayne advocated the successful expansion of existing pediatric postdoctoral programs within California and encouraged the establishment of new residency programs such as the Children’s Hospital of San Diego program. He explored new strategies to train pediatric dentists at a time when faculty positions were being lost to attrition. Given the Foundation’s efforts to improve academic participation and children’s access to care through maximizing the capabilities of the graduate programs, Wayne’s interests and experience should prove to be a valuable asset.

Dr. Grossman is a graduate of UCSF and completed his residency at that same institution. His practice in the Sacramento area provides care to a diverse population including patients from all social strata and with medical and developmental needs. He has a long-term association with the Sutter Craniofacial Anomalies Panel and is involved with legislative activities of his local dental society.

Wayne lives in Carmichael with his wife, Zoe, and son, Alan. He has recently taken on the complexities of Little League scoring.

Foundation Board Approves New Faculty Development Grant Programs

The CSPD Foundation recently approved guidelines for a new program of Faculty Development Grant Opportunities, Fellowships and Awards as proposed and developed by its Allocation Committee chaired by Gila Dorostkar. Steve Blain conducted a needs assessment from discussions with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association and the American Dental Education Association. In addition, interviews were conducted with the program chairs and heads of pediatric dental departments throughout the state of California. Several themes emerged from the interviews that are consistent with a national trend:

  • The large indebtedness either after dental school or after the training program contributes to graduates wanting to go into private practice to repay the loans.
  • The greatest need at this time is pediatric dental educators versus practitioners, but the latter need being important as well.
  • Private practice is very lucrative, especially compared to an academic career.
  • Dental schools do not or cannot pay competitive salaries.
  • There are few formal programs to encourage and cultivate pediatric dental educators even if candidates are identified.
  • All the schools are depending on part time, with or without salary faculty to teach didactic and clinical pediatric dentistry. In some cases, generalists are teaching the students.

Each pediatric dental department had their particular problems with fulfilling the manpower needs. The lack of sufficient funding was the major reason and secondly, the lack of personnel to fill a funded position. Four major recommendations emerged from the conversations that are representative of all five schools in varying degrees:

  1. The need for loan forgiveness
  2. Monies to augment pediatric dental faculty salaries to enhance recruitment
  3. Increasing the number and quality of part time with and without salary instructors
  4. Develop fellowships to cultivate pediatric dental educators

The Board determined that the primary focus should be on recommendations #3 and #4 at this time, fostering faculty recruitment and retention at each of the California dental schools and thus approved goals, objectives and outcome assessments to realize this mission.

Funding levels are to be determined by the number and quality of proposals submitted and by the funds available for awards in any given year as determined by the Board of Trustees. Recipients of these grants, fellowships and awards will be required to complete reports, present their research or complete projects as part of the grant process. Dates and details for submission of applications will be announced at a later date.

In summary, the Pediatric Faculty Development grant for Part-time Dental Educators is meant to address the immediate needs for faculty recruitment and retention. The Investigator-initiated Research grant is offered to meet the interim needs. The Program Development grant for the Fellowship is an effort to meet a longer-range goal. The Mentorship and Internship grants are offered to sensitize pre and post doctorates to the issues and lastly, the research awards are designed to give ongoing support to pediatric dental post-doctorates and faculty in the development of their careers.

Financial Overview of the CSPD Foundation Fiscal 2004-2005

Presented is the financial summary of the CSPD Foundation for the fiscal year 2004-2005. The report supports the strategy of the Foundation board of directors to continue to develop the corpus of monies as well as fund programs that support its mission.

The membership of CSPD continued to support this mission with increased numbers in both number and size of contributions to the Foundation annual campaign. With this positive participation from the membership, it allows the Foundation to seek out additional corporate donations to expand programs that support the Foundation mission.
