ANNOUNCEMENTS

CSPD Foundation President

Summer 2007

President's Message

Richard Sobel, D.D.S.

Fall is always a time for increased grant requests. CSPD and our Foundation have begun receiving inquiries regarding the funding of research projects and we anticipate supporting a number of creative and significant proposals. A committee of our foundation shall now be the evaluating body for all research proposals for both organizations. In this way we can assure high standards and consistency of applications as well as provide a means for tracking and measuring the effectiveness and appropriate nature of each of our awards. This will also aid in encouraging presentation of the results of these projects at professional meetings and their publication, whenever possible.

Substantially larger research awards (up to $20,000 over 2 years), as Investigator-Initiated Grants, are available. These should directly aid in supporting faculty member research projects thereby adding to the knowledge base in pediatric dentistry.

In addition, we are continuing our effort to support pediatric dental departments and programs in California by making available a Faculty Development Grant for Part-Time Educators. This is envisioned as a facilitator in the recruitment, training and retention of clinicians into part-time teaching roles at each school.

Questions regarding any of our grants or awards programs should be directed to Steve Blain at steve.b1@cox.net or through our executive director, Mel Rowan.

We have recently affirmed our financial support for postdoctoral student attendance and participation at the CSPD Annual Meeting. Our foundation will be a partner in underwriting a portion of the registration fee for California pediatric dental residents at this important meeting.

Our corpus of funds has continued to grow and is allowing us to consider new and more substantial programs to enhance pediatric dental educational programs. Thank you to the 232 members who contributed this past year. As we grow we will be encouraging corporate donations. Business enterprises are always interested in what percentage of our members support their own foundation. We hope all of you will remember this and contribute, even if it is not a large gift. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and I look forward to your contributions in the CSPDF upcoming Annual Giving Campaign.

As always, if you have any suggestions or questions, please contact me via email, telephone, or by mail. I always appreciate speaking with our members about our goals and projects.

Foundation Launches 7th Annual Giving Campaign

CSPD members will soon receive the appeal for their support of the CSPD Foundation’s 2007-2008 Annual Giving Campaign.

The participation of CSPD members in our Foundation continues to set a mark to be envied by like organizations. Our level of participation is virtually unheard of from the membership of any other affiliated organizations in dentistry, where a much smaller level of participation is considered successful. CSPD members appreciate the care with which the Foundation Board manages these funds and they understand the pivotal role that the Foundation plays in addressing the crisis in pediatric dental education in California.

Without the continuing support of each and every CSPD member through contributions to this annual campaign, the Foundation would not be able to continue with the efforts to achieve its goals.

If you haven’t contributed in the past, please consider joining your colleagues by donating to the Foundation this year. If you have been a donor in prior years, the board encourages you to consider increasing the level of your support, perhaps joining the colleagues who have already become Presidents’ Circle Life Members.

Undergraduate Pediatric Dental Study Clubs Are Doing Great

Scott Fishman, Trustee

Scott Fishman CSPDF Trustee

The CSPDF is proud of our student pediatric dental study clubs represented at all five of our California dental schools. This bulletin’s focus is on the Pacific Dental School. Dr. Jeffery Wood directs the study club. The Pacific pediatric dental study club meets on a regular basis. This past August, the students met for an article review and discussion on the survival and reasons for failure of amalgam versus composite posterior restorations placed in a randomized clinical trial. The second meeting was on externship experiences and how to prepare for the PASS application process, as well as interviews of the current residents. Future meetings will include the annual pediatric study club Thanksgiving food drive to benefit the San Francisco food bank, and there will be a presentation on how to develop a CV for the entire student body. The semester will conclude with one last presentation, collaborating with the Academy of General Dentistry on a school-wide program on the incorporation of pediatric patients into the general practice. The foundation is proud to sponsor Dr. Wood and his thriving study group at the Pacific. More reviews will be included in future Bulletins.

Spring 2007

President's Message

Richard Sobel, D.D.S.

I am thrilled to announce a grand success. In response to a challenge grant from our Foundation, alumni and friends of UCLA are in the process of endowing a chair in pediatric dentistry in the name of Dr. Thomas Barber. Many thanks go to Drs. Mark Lisagor and Scott Jacks for leading this campaign. Please read the details in the accompanying article.Congratulations!

As I reported in February, our new Strategic Plan has been completed and the actions to carry out our goals have begun. In the charges to our incoming board is the formation of a consortium meeting with the chairs of the pediatric dental departments and the postdoctoral program directors in California. This will aid us in structuring new projects so that they are more focused on the needs of each individual program. This group will also develop mechanisms to assure that our grants and awards are used for pediatric dental education of students and do not become diluted or redirected away from our primary target at each school.

On the subject of stimulating greater numbers of educators, I would like to call your attention to the new AAPD Master Clinicians program. This program, to be announced on Sunday, May 27 in San Antonio at the Annual Meeting, is designed for mature practitioners to guide them to become competent clinical educators. I encourage all of you to participate so that more positions will be filled in the schools and postdoctoral programs in our state.

Please review the article summarizing the funding and granting activities of our Foundation through its first five years and its current financial status. We are expanding our programs through the funding of two new, and substantially larger, awards. These are Faculty Development Grants for Part-Time Educators and Investigator-Initiated Research Grants for the faculty members of our dental schools. The criteria for each of these is available at each school, on our website and through Mel Rowan.

As you know by having read this far into the Bulletin, our Executive Director, Mel Rowan, has announced his retirement. Mel has truly helped move CSPD to maturity as a professional organization. He has led us to expand our advocacy roles, enhance membership services and expand our annual meetings. Mel has done even more for this Foundation, by providing leadership and structure during our formative years. His expertise and experience in association affairs has guided our Board and its Presidents through their deliberations and actions. Thank you, Mel.

I would also like to thank the board members who have completed their service to our Foundation: Madeleine Brandli, Howard Dixon, and Marty Steigner. They are off to new challenges and tasks and we wish them well. Join me in welcoming Steve Gross, Dick Mungo, Lisa Brennan and Jeff Wood to our board. Each of these people will bring a different point of view to our organization. Please review their biographical backgrounds in the accompanying article.

Finally, please continue to share with us with your thoughts and opinions as we are expanding our programs. Thank you again for your generous contributions and support of our Foundation.

Warren Brandli Leadership Intern Program

Download CSPD Warren Brandli Leadership Intern Program Application

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry is accepting applications for the Warren Brandli Leadership Intern Program. Current pediatric dental residents and individuals in their first five years of post-residency residing in California are eligible to apply. This opportunity was created for individuals who are in training programs or in the early stages of their career to participate in the CSPD governance and advocacy activities, attend internal organizational and inter-professional meetings, and complete a project designated by the CSPD Board President by the end of the program.

Through these activities, CSPD hopes to:

  • Familiarize candidates about the specialty, its governance and social and political issues facing pediatric dentistry in the 21st century.
  • Expose new members to the administrative and membership functions of the Society.
  • Inform members of organizational strategies, advocacy and inter-professional relationships not commonly available to pediatric dentists in practice or academics.
  • Prepare members to assume leadership roles in dental specialty governance, particularly within the CSPD and the AAPD governance structures.

Applicants must be willing to attend all regular meetings of the CSPD Board of Directors as well as the Society’s Leadership Orientation Session at the annual meeting and Strategic Planning Session, which is held every third year. Other opportunities may include attendance at the meetings of the Dental Board of California, California legislative hearings, California Dental Association-sponsored advocacy events and community leadership and/or Public Policy Advocate.

The CSPD will arrange transportation and lodging and will cover all program-related administrative costs and supply needs. Selection will be based on the applicant’s 1) completion of an application, 2) submission of a short essay about the candidate’s interest and specific personal goals for the program, 3) relevant activities or roles within their professional sphere and 4) two required letters of reference (one of which should be from the program director if the applicant is a current pediatric dental resident).

Applications are due December 1st, 2007 and selections will be made and announced prior to the next annual session. The internship period will begin with the final meeting of the Board of Directors held in conjunction with the annual session and will finish 12 months later at the final meeting of the next Board of Directors at which time each intern will give a final report about their project.

CSPD Foundation Grants and Awards Update

CSPD Foundation Grants and Awards RFPs

Money Available to Faculty and Student Investigators

"The Foundation is ready to put its money to good use," states Treasurer Ken Szymanski, "I'm ready to write more checks." Szymanski is referring to four categories of grants that have been established to further the goals of fostering research and developing faculty at California's pediatric dental programs. "The CSPD Foundation is foremost concerned with strengthening the Pediatric Dental Programs that exist in California," President Richard Sobel reminds us. "These grants and awards are great starting points and can really help each program."

Two categories of travel awards exist to help either faculty or residents to be able to present their research findings at national or international meetings. Up to $500 is available to help defray travel expenses.

Research grants are now available for up to $20,000 ($10,000 per year for two years). Pediatric dental post-doctoral students or recent grads are eligible for theses awards on topics that will contribute to the knowledge base in Pediatric Dentistry. This Investigator-Initiated Research Grant will initially be funded in January of 2008. Completed proposals are due October 1st for 2007. Inquiries should be directed to the chair of the CSPD Awards and Grants Committee, Steve Blain (steve.b1@cox.net).

In an effort to further assist the state's pediatric dental programs, CSPD has developed the Faculty Development Grant for part-time Pediatric Dental Educators. These grants are designed to facilitate the recruitment and retention of clinicians to teach part-time and may be available to each program annually. The Faculty Development grant will provide a maximum of $5,000 to attract and retain clinicians who desire to be teachers, thereby bringing mid to late career clinicians into the educational system. These grants have deadlines for submission. More detailed information and applications can be obtained from Dr. Steve Blain or from the CSPD office. Complete RFP's, application forms, and additional information is available on the CSPD website via links to CSPDF.

CSPD Foundation President

Winter 2007

President's Message

Richard Sobel, D.D.S.

The Foundation Board has just completed its Strategic Planning session and I direct you to the accompanying article by Madeleine Brandli describing this session.

I want to thank all CSPD members who participated and especially the committee of Madeleine Brandli, Mark Lisagor, Lonnie Lovingier and Mel Rowan who prepared this program. We were fortunate to have as our facilitator Dr. William Cordeiro and I thank him for his leadership in this thought provoking exercise. When the committee receives the facilitator’s report, they will refine the plan, finalizing our objectives, projects and the specifics to be measured. I also truly appreciate speaking with individual CSPD members during these past few months, hearing their concerns and sharing with the board their thoughts and opinions regarding our foundation and their suggestions for our future directions.

We will be initiating a series of exploratory and ongoing meetings with the pediatric dental department chairs and program directors within California. Our board will seek their advice regarding new projects so that we structure those to be directly effective for each institution. In addition, we are developing improved mechanisms to track and assess the outcomes of our grants and awards.

Identifying, encouraging and selecting those interested in educational careers and teaching academicians to teach more effectively (be they neophytes or "seasoned" clinicians) are two of our greatest challenges. In order to help alleviate faculty shortages we must address these more effectively by our programs.

Our Foundation is now prepared to offer Faculty Development Grants for Part-Time Educators and Investigator-Initiated Research Grants for faculty at our dental schools and graduate programs. We will be examining proposals in these two new, and substantially larger, funding categories. This should support faculty members in two different roles in their academic careers. Details of the requirements for each of these programs are now available at each school and we look forward to the opportunity to award these grant to the successful applicants.

In the coming weeks we will have a detailed summary of our past grants and awards activity. A report of this data will be presented in the next Bulletin and will be available for review by all CSPD members on the foundation pages of the CSPD website, along with information about the new Strategic Plan.

We are in need of additional volunteer committee members to help with the organizational and evaluative portions of our expanded grants and awards categories. Please do not hesitate to ask how you may be of help to us.

As always, we appreciate your ongoing and generous support for our Foundation.

Strategic Planning Session for CSPD Foundation

Madeleine Brandli

Dr. William Cordeiro, professor of Business at CSU Channel Islands, led Foundation Board members and other invited CSPD members in a Strategic Planning session on 27 January 2007 in Los Angeles. A nationally recognized expert in the field of Strategic Planning, Dr. Cordeiro guided participants through a planning model for the next 3-5 years that revisited Mission and Vision statements and explored the culture and values of the Foundation, these latter being the major elements of the internal value system that defines every organization. Dr. Cordeiro noted that this value system is the most important part of planning, since it dominates all else.

In a detailed SWOT analysis, participants discussed the internal Strengths and Weaknesses of the Foundation and the Opportunities and Threats inherent in the external environment. Dr. Cordeiro introduced the concepts of "Critical Success Factor equals Credibility" and "Intellectual Integrity equals Realistic Worldview for Planning," explaining how they could serve to guide the Foundation in making its decisions.

Dr. Cordeiro described a Strategic Plan as essentially a guide for the appropriate allocation of time and resources directed toward activities that fulfill the Mission and Vision of the organization. Participants developed 5 Strategic Initiatives, which represent the key activities of the Foundation going forward. These included the continuation of ongoing grant & award projects, maintaining a giving campaign to build the corpus of funds and support grants and awards, evaluating Board and organizational structure to plan for future growth and change, developing an enhanced marketing plan to better communicate with donors, and creation of a consortium of academic faculty leaders and Board members. This consortium will brainstorm problems and identify areas unique to each school or program, which could be helped by Foundation support.

Finally, objectives, the specific targets for performance, were identified for each of the Strategic Initiatives. The allocation of resources was determined, including designation of specific committee/persons to be responsible, timing and description of the actions required and the time and funding required to bring each objective to completion. Dr. Cordeiro emphasized that all Strategic Plans must have built into them ways to capture and measure the results. He reminded the participants that, that which cannot be measured cannot be managed.

Dr. Cordeiro will produce a Strategic Plan document that will be reviewed by the committee and then submitted to the Foundation Board for its further review and approval at its March, 2007 meeting in Seattle.

Annual Giving Campaign Reaches Record High

With several months still remaining in this year’s Annual Giving Campaign, the Foundation has already surpassed all previous years’ totals. Many Presidents’ Circle donors have increased their commitment to the goals and future plans of the Foundation by taking advantage of the opportunity to become Life Members of the Foundation through conversion of their support to a multi-year pledge. As you can see by the current roster of donors in this issue, a great number of CSPD members have joined the ranks of Life Membership.

This year’s campaign also saw the first single gift from a member at the Presidents’ Circle Life $25,000 level. In an effort to offer further opportunities for continued support to current Life Members who have completed their pledges, the Foundation has begun to solicit additional pledges that allow Life Members to move to this higher level by pledging an additional $15,000 over a maximum of ten years, and several CSPD members have already taken advantage of this new option.

It’s not too late to add your name to growing list of CSPD members. Foundation Board members are always available to discuss your participation in this vital effort.

New Grants

CSPDF Approved Two New Grants to Support California Pediatric Dental Education.

The first grant is a Research Grant. Research proposals are now being solicited for the Investigator-Initiated Research Grant on a topic that will contribute to the knowledge base in pediatric dentistry and will lead to improved oral health of children. This grant will provide $20,000 ($10,000 per year for two years) and CSPD membership is required. Pediatric dental post-doctoral students and recent graduates who will be supervised by a senior investigator may apply. Proposals will be evaluated for significance, approach, innovation, relevance to pediatric dentistry and overall scientific merit.

The second grant is a Faculty Development Grant. This is for Part-time Pediatric Dental Educators. It has been created to assist pediatric dental programs at California dental schools and non-university affiliated programs in California with the recruitment and retention of non-salaried clinicians to teach part time in the dental education system. The grant will provide a maximum of $5000 to each school in any one year. It is intended to attract and retain clinicians who desire to be teachers. Applicants must be members of CSPD and be recommended by the Pediatric Dental chairperson or his designate or the non-university affiliated program director.

For further information on either grant, please e-mail inquiries to Mel Rowan at melrowan@aol.com.

Foundation Announces Endowed Chair Challenge Grant Program

Mark Lisagor, DDS

The Foundation is continuing its mission of addressing the critical shortage of full and part time faculty. The CSPD Foundation Board has announced a new Challenge Grant Program. This program is designed to encourage alumni and friends of all the pediatric dental programs in California to consider making contributions to an endowed chair. These Fund-raising campaigns in pediatric dentistry will provide a margin of excellence in attracting and retaining faculty for years to come.

At each of the state’s dental schools, perpetual funds may be set up to create endowed chairs in pediatric dentistry. The funds realized from these endowments are then used to perpetually support and enhance a full time faculty position, making a career in academics more attractive to a potential or continuing faculty person. This can make a major difference for someone interested in pursuing a career in academe, but challenged by the high cost of living in the urban centers.

The Foundation will support any successful endowed chair campaign with a 10% challenge grant of up to $100,000 for any of the five dental schools, which complete a successful fund-raising campaign. Currently, endowments are possible at either the $500,000 or $1,000,000 levels and higher, depending on the school.

The development staffs at the various dental schools are all willing and eager to support interested alumni in creating appropriate campaigns. The CSPD Foundation Board believes this to be a significant way to enhance pediatric dental education in the state and can be an excellent way for alumni to give back to the programs, which provided them the training for their careers.

Interested members of CSPD should contact the development staff at the dental schools or members of the CSPD Foundation Board.

Treasurer's Report

CSPD Foundation Campaign Summary 2005-2006

Ken Szymanski DDS

The CSPD Foundation was formed in May of 2001, and was started with seed money from CSPD Past Presidents. Since that time the Foundation has grown annually through the support of the CSPD membership. I am happy to report our most successful fund-raising campaign to date. The 2005-2006 campaign total was 14% greater than last year totaling some $132,000.

This support helps satisfy two goals of the Foundation, to continue to fund programs that follow the Foundation’s mission as well as growing our base corpus to expand our reach in program and grant funding. During the last fiscal year, over 90% of raised funds went directly to meet the above stated goals. Allocations were used to fund both research and student and professional development at our state pediatric dental programs. Our base corpus has grown to its highest level since inception approaching a half million dollars. In addition, a new asset allocation program was put in place to provide increased investment returns, while still maintaining safety and protection of the invested funds.

To the members of CSPD, the Foundation Trustees wish to thank you for your positive support, and we hope to increase the number of CSPD members who contribute by keeping you well informed about the efforts of the Foundation and the good work that is being accomplished to meet the need for pediatric dental care in California.
