ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dr. Richard Sobel

Winter 2009

President's Message

Dr. Richard Sobel

I wish to thank all of you who have completed the Foundation’s survey during the past few months. In this New Year we will be moving into expanded directions, some of which have been recommended by your responses. We are also proud to have selected some exceptional new candidates to join our board in moving our programs forward. You will meet them at the CSPD Annual Meeting at Squaw Creek in April, and learn more about them in the Spring issue of the Bulletin.

The Foundation is moving to enhance its impact on pediatric dental education and providing more support for our academicians. We are now developing a job description and program for a Resource Development Director, who would enable us to secure grants and contributions from outside of CSPD so as to fund these more costly, innovative programs.

Currently we are again supporting student pediatric dental student groups at each school, partially funding postdoctoral student attendance at the CSPD Annual Meeting and funding the Warren Brandli CSPD Board Intern. We have also recently awarded an Investigator-Initiated Research Grant to a new faculty member at UCSF.

We are strongly encouraging applications for the Foundation’s scholarship to attend Master Clinician training. This is a superb program for half to full time academicians which is held in conjunction with the AAPD at the Academy of Academic Leadership’s Institute for Teaching and Learning. It is designed to expand the knowledge, skills and educational structure of those teaching within our pediatric dental departments or with our postdoctoral programs. Please contact Ray Stewart, our Executive Director, for more details in order to apply for this coming academic year.

To aid in communicating the details of all of our grant categories as well as our current recipients and their projects, we are simplifying access to the Foundation’s pages on the CSPD Website. You will soon be able to select our information directly from the CSPD homepage. In addition, you will also be able to contribute to the Foundation on-line, through this website.

This last point reminds me to request that our completed Life Members consider continuing their support beyond their Life Member commitment, contributing to donor directed funds or continued general funds giving. There are many unique opportunities for giving, in addition to our annual appeal. Please, everyone, also consider a gift in your name, or that of your practice, for special occasion or recognition (for instance, a birth or private achievement, a memorial tribute, or to acknowledge a patient referral or exceptional staff member).

At this year’s Annual Meeting in Squaw Creek we will have a silent and live auction culminating at the Saturday evening social function. As you all remember from last year, this was a very lively event allowing all of us to compete for a wide variety of items. We invite your contributions to our auction and have already secured some wonderful gifts and trips for your bidding. Please see Steve Gross’s email message and his article regarding the auction.

The Foundation Presidents’ Circle reception will be held on Friday evening following the afternoon lecture by Dr. Mao. This invitation only event gives your Foundation Board an opportunity to acknowledge and thank our leadership donors, who have allowed us to continue and expand our programs in pediatric dental education in California.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me at sobelrl(at)aol.com or at 510-531-4008. I look forward to seeing all of you at Squaw Creek.

Fall 2008

President's Message

Dr. Richard Sobel

As our Foundation enters its 8th year we have reflected on the magnificent support of CSPD members and the dedication those who have served on our Board and committees. We are reexamining our directions and programs and the goals of our strategic plan. To this end we need your input. We have provided a short on-line survey in which you can express your opinions and desires for our Foundation. We need your responses; please go online and give us some feedback.

In looking toward our future and more expansive projects we are investigating the benefits of a development director to enable us to raise the funds needed for the projects which we envision. This will involve corporate, foundation and grant fundraising appropriate to our needs to fulfill our future goals.

Recently we initiated the funding of a Master Clinician Training Program for those mature practitioners who are becoming part time or full time academicians. This program will be analogous to that of the AAPD, but for educators at our California schools and programs. Please see Lisa Brennan’s report detailing this exciting program designed to aid each school and new faculty members. See if this fits your upcoming plans and how you will benefit from this excellent training.

We continue, as always, to fund deserving grants and are pleased to be receiving requests for our investigator-initiated research awards. Consider all of our award and grant categories to help support your educational or research projects. Please contact Steve Blain at stephenb@dent.ucla.edu for further information.

We see that some early respondents to our survey have also volunteered to serve on our committees or help with current projects. You shall be receiving more detailed communications from us soon regarding avenues for participation.

Again, please complete our survey. We look forward to your responses as we examine future directions. Thank you always for your generous contributions and support as we enter our new fundraising campaign year.

Summer 2008

President's Message

Dr. Richard Sobel

Because of the generous and continuous support of CSPD members our Foundation is now able to go beyond funding its basic academic and grant programs. The time has come for us to begin an external fundraising campaign and to expand our programs and awards. To this end, I hope you will respond to the internet survey which will arrive soon to help prioritize our future projects in education and the care of California children. (see related article on the front cover)

Our Foundation is proud to support the CSPD On-Line education programs. These courses, which are inexpensive and can be taken for credit, help to fulfill the CE credit requirements for dentists and their clinical staff members for California licensure. They are quite thorough and easily accessible, always available at a time of your convenience. Hopefully, these courses will also attract other dentists to our website and aid them in providing dental care for children.

During the 2009 CSPD Annual Meeting at Squaw Creek the Foundation will sponsor a program describing the science behind the use of dental mesenchymal stem cells and its potential as therapeutic interventions in medicine. More details about this exciting program and speaker will be available in our next Bulletin.

Our ongoing grant programs for part-time educators and investigator initiated research are available for faculty members. We look forward to your proposals. In addition, we have been able to provide the travel funds necessary for both faculty members and postdoctoral students to present their pediatric dental research projects at professional meetings.

Your continuing support is truly appreciated. Please complete our brief web-based survey regarding our future direction. Your opinions are important to all of us.

We are now encouraging even more proposals for funding through our various grants. This especially applies to our currently available support program for new part-time educators and their departments.

CSPD Foundation President

Spring 2008

President's Message

Richard Sobel, D.D.S.

Our Foundation child is growing up - The CSPD Foundation is seven years old!

Another birthday; our Foundation child is growing. The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation is seven years old!

On March 30th our Foundation had another birthday. CSPDF has experienced steady growth of more than $100,000 per year thanks to its loyal supporters. Following an inspirational delivery by our "obstetricianlike" past presidents of CSPD, the trustees have acted as guardian parents to CSPDF. These directors have helped it grow, with hard work and late nights, occasionally enduring bouts of teething and periods of colic.

Spreading our goals of furthering pediatric dental education and addressing academic workforce deficiencies is not without a learning curve. We began by connecting with, and encouraging, the dental school undergraduate groups to help support their programs. These are the feeder groups into the specialty of pediatric dentistry and the ultimate source of future academicians in our specialty.

Children need education and guidance as they grow. Our foundation looks to the pediatric dental program directors and chairs for guidance on how they specifically can be helped by our support. Like any new grandparent, they are having some difficulty deciding what the role of the foundation will be and how we can help their faculties grow.

Now approaching adolescence, we are re-framing our strategic plan to reach out beyond CSPD into the business and foundation communities for expanded levels of support. We are very proud of our member donations and percentage of participation. Their continued support has laid the foundation for the extensive fundraising which will be necessary to allow us to reach our ultimate goals, as we investigate even bolder programs, such as loan forgiveness and teaching fellowships.

We are now encouraging even more proposals for funding through our various grants. This especially applies to our currently available support program for new part-time educators and their departments.

We are thankful to Drs. Joel Berg, Amy Lederman, Bob Traficante and Rebecca Slayton for their lecture presentation at the CSPD Annual Meeting in Rancho Bernardo. This course, the "Academic Workforce: Working Together to Preserve It", was wellattended and appreciated by all. I hope all who attended will take their message to heart and offer to participate as an educator at their favorite pediatric dental program.

Also, thank you all for your donations and active bidding at our Silent (and Not-So-Very Silent) Auction at the annual meeting. Through the efforts of Scott Fishman, Steve Gross and Mark Lisagor your generosity raised almost $ 9,000 for our upcoming projects.

We appreciate all the love and support you have given our child, CSPDF. Let’s help its continued growth in the coming years.

CSPD Foundation President

Winter 2007

President's Message

Richard Sobel, D.D.S.

As we begin 2008, I would like to thank all of you for your continued support of our Foundation. Your contributions are the core of our success. They enhance our ability to seek outside funding for even greater projects.

We are extremely pleased that Dr. Ray Stewart has been selected to serve as the new Executive Director for both CSPD and our Foundation. Ray comes to this position after years of serving the CSPD and the AAPD in many leadership roles. In addition, he brings clinical and managerial experience as a partner in a large group practice in Monterey County. As an academician he served as the program director of the Harbor General Hospital UCLA postdoctoral program. We look forward to his extensive knowledge and new perspective to help us guide the Foundation. Ray will assume these responsibilities in May, following the CSPD Annual Meeting.

It will certainly be a major adjustment to have Mel Rowan retire as our Executive Director. His experience, knowledgeable perspective and astute guidance will surely be missed by all of our board members. There will be more about Mel in the Spring Bulletin.

Recently we have funded an investigatorinitiated research grant and are currently evaluating other proposals in this category. These grants are designed to provide financial support, which allows faculty members to pursue projects that have expenses not covered by their university or hospital employers.

The Warren Brandli Fellowship Grant, designed to train our future leaders, has been so successful in the past two years that we are supporting two young pediatric dentists to serve in this capacity for the 2008-2009 year. Our past participants are both active in CSPD, serving on volunteer committees.

In conjunction with CSPD and commercial sponsors of CSPD, we are funding student registration at the CSPD Annual Meeting to a far greater extent than in the past.

The Foundation’s upcoming continuing education program, "The Academic Workforce: Working Together To Preserve It" will be presented on Thursday, April 10, 2008, from 12:30 - 5:30 in Rancho Bernardo, just preceding the CSPD Welcome Reception. This program is directed by Dr. Joel Berg, chair of pediatric dentistry at the University of Washington and the current AAPD Trustee from our district VI. It is designed both for the new graduate and the mature clinician, to encourage their participation as academicians in the educational programs throughout California. We all have something to share with students, so please attend this program and consider becoming a faculty member (if you have not yet done so) at your favorite dental school or postdoctoral program. As always, there is no cost to attend this CE program and all CSPD members are welcome. This year we shall have a silent (and not so silent) auction during the Annual Meeting. Please visit our display in the exhibitors’ area and during the cocktail hour just prior to the Saturday evening dinner. Bid wisely, and generously, for the excellent items available.

Again, thank you for supporting our students, grants and educational programs throughout the year.

I look forward to your contributions to our current Annual Giving Campaign.

As always, if you have suggestions or questions, or wish to serve on any of our committees, please contact me via email, telephone or mail. I always appreciate speaking with our members about our goals and projects.

Scholarships Offered to Enhance Excellence in Teaching

A Pediatric Dentistry Master Clinician Program

Dr. Lisa Brennan, Trustee

Dr. Lisa Brennan

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation has voted to fund up to two California new faculty members to attend the 2009 teachers training course presented by the Institute for Teaching and Learning in the Health Professions Program in cooperation with the Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

The need to help dentists prepare for the academic side of dentistry has long been well-recognized. The Academy of Academic Leadership, through their program called the Institute for Teaching and Learning in the Health Professions Program for Dental School Faculty, helps provide these needed skills. This group is led by Dr. Karl Haden, an expert in health professionals’ education. This group has taught 35 dentists, various subjects such as case-based learning, addressing personality and learning styles including working with the "Generation Y" student, advanced clinical and classroom teaching practices and research and publication. This year, the programs were presented at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry and University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry providing a real-life context for the learning experience.

For 2008, the Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry sponsored 5 dentists to attend the Academy of Academic Leadership plus the AAPD Comprehensive Review of Pediatric Dentistry course. This was a part of the AAPD’s Master Clinician program. Those receiving the grants were from Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, Kentucky College of Dentistry, St. Joseph Hospital for Specialty Care, Meharry School of Dentistry and Dr. Elliot Shulman with 25 years in the US Air Force who will be transitioning into WVU.

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation is offering 2 full tuition scholarships of approximately $5500 for the Health Professions Program and the AAPD Review Course. It will involve two phases with the Leadership Institute (total of 6.5 days) and the 2 day review course. Transportation would be paid for by the candidate and/or affiliated dental school.

If selected, the candidate would be required to commit to teaching in a California dental school or Pediatric Dentistry postdoctoral program for at least two days per week for a minimum of one year. A letter verifying acceptance of a position from a dean of the dental school is also required.

If you are interested in applying and able to meet the requirements for the Pediatric Dentistry Master Clinician program scholarship, please contact the Foundation’s Executive Director, Dr. Ray Stewart for further information and/or an application at Dr. Ray Stewart.

Together We Can Make A Difference

Dear Friends and Associates,

Steven Gross CSPDF Trustee

Last year was the first time that I participated in the CSPDF Silent/Live Auction in Rancho Bernardo. We raised almost $10,000 that day. It was fun, exciting, rewarding for all.

We did a good thing. But I must confess to having walked away from the event with an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction mixed with regret.

Simply put: We could have done better. Lots better. The potential was there.

It still is. This year I am campaigning for more of everything: more donated items, more contributors, more fun - and more $$ to improve the scope of pediatric dental education.

I challenge each and every one of you to join me in making this year’s event the most successful ever. Raid your wine cellars, call in those overdue favors, call upon your vast resources and make an auction item donation of artwork; jewelry; sports and entertainment tickets; upscale gift baskets; recordings; memorabilia...sky’s the limit!

Dig deep for this great cause. You’re entitled to a tax deduction for any and all donated items, but the true reward is in having done something important and meaningful and good for a worthy cause.

To start the ball rolling, I will personally donate six bottles of Jourdan Cabernet ’04 - a very good year. As representative of the Appliance Therapy Group and Space Maintainer’s Laboratories, I have added a pair of Dodger tickets and a set of golf clubs to the list of auction items.

The rest is up to you. Join me in making a difference.

Please note: donations (and attendance) are not limited to members. Corporate sponsors are welcome as well.

To make a donation (or for more information), you can contact me at (800) 423-3270 or steve@theatg.org.

Steven Gross, CSPDF Trustee

Foundation Launches 7th Annual Giving Campaign

CSPD members will soon receive the appeal for their support of the CSPD Foundation’s 2007-2008 Annual Giving Campaign.

The participation of CSPD members in our Foundation continues to set a mark to be envied by like organizations. Our level of participation is virtually unheard of from the membership of any other affiliated organizations in dentistry, where a much smaller level of participation is considered successful. CSPD members appreciate the care with which the Foundation Board manages these funds and they understand the pivotal role that the Foundation plays in addressing the crisis in pediatric dental education in California.

Without the continuing support of each and every CSPD member through contributions to this annual campaign, the Foundation would not be able to continue with the efforts to achieve its goals.

If you haven’t contributed in the past, please consider joining your colleagues by donating to the Foundation this year. If you have been a donor in prior years, the board encourages you to consider increasing the level of your support, perhaps joining the colleagues who have already become Presidents’ Circle Life Members.

American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry University of Southern California Student Chapter

Dr. Scott Fishman, Trustee

Scott Fishman CSPDF Trustee

The future of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry (USCSD) is bright indeed. The School of Dentistry has a history of providing students who are interested in specialty training with various educational experiences which allow them to explore these interests. One of the more active programs at USCSD has involved the specialty of pediatric dentistry.

A few years ago, the USC School of Dentistry began a pediatric dentistry club with the help of Dr. Richard Udin and Dr. Julie Jenks. The Pedo Study Club, as it is known, started back in 2004 and has held quarterly presentations on various topics in pediatric dentistry, such as behavior guidance, pulp therapy, local anesthesia, asthma, and other topics. Generally, these meetings are attended by about 30 to 40 dental students from various classes, and these meetings are always well received by the student body who participate.

At the urging of some of the dental students who regularly attended the meetings of the Pedo Study Club, the Pediatric Dentistry Selective (PDS) was started in 2005 with the vision of providing opportunities for additional experiences in pediatric dentistry for third and fourth year dental students. The faculty advisors for the USC PDS are Dr. Gardner Beale and Dr. Julie Jenks. The goal of PDS is to give the dental students more exposure to pediatric dentistry through literature reviews, community outreach programs, hospital externships, and clinical rotations in the USCSD Pediatric Dentistry Clinic and community clinics.

Currently, the PDS is in its 3rd year, and this year has truly been an exceptional year in terms of the experiences provided to the students. Our officers for this year are co-presidents Mary Pham and Sunny Fereshteh, and secretary Rachel DiPasquale. The current group of students meets bi-monthly to discuss literature reviews of current topics in pediatric dentistry. Furthermore, the students also participate in a variety of activities, including community health fairs where dental screenings and oral health education are provided to children and families.

Most recently, members of the Pediatric Dental Selective participated in the Family Fun Dental Fair, sponsored by USCSD. The selective students as well as other dental student volunteers helped with visual dental screenings of over 450 patients; adults and children. In July, the USCSD hosts its annual Dental Explorers program, which is designed for high school and college aged students who are interested in dentistry. Many of the dental explorers come from underprivileged families and would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in a similar program. This is an interactive two week program where the students learn about subjects in dentistry through a lecture which is then followed by a related hands-on activity in the simulation lab. The USCSD PDS gave a presentation on dental sealants and stressed the importance for prevention. Following the presentation, the dental explorers were able to place sealants on extracted teeth set in stone blocks. The PDS also participated in Give Kids a Smile Day in February providing visual dental screenings for children.

PDS is unique in providing its members the opportunity to participate in externships, research, and community service. Many of the PDS members have completed externships at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Orange County. They are also given the opportunity to rotate through the Children’s Dental Center, which is a community-based clinic providing comprehensive dental care to underserved children. During the summer, PDS members who were interested became certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support; a two day class that is offered to pediatric dental residents and faculty. For the past three years some PDS members have attended the USC Pediatric Alumni Day where the graduating second year pediatric dental residents present their research.

Many of our former students who participated in the Pedo Study Club and/or the Pediatric Dentistry Selective have gone on to pursue careers in the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry. Because of the opportunities in pediatric dentistry which are available to students here at USCSD, the number of applications from USC dental students to pediatric dentistry residency programs has more than doubled.

We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Scott Fishman and the CSPD Foundation for their continued support for these activities.

American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Loma Linda University Student Chapter

Dr. Scott Fishman, Trustee

Scott Fishman CSPDF Trustee

Unlike the other pediatric student group programs at the other schools, the Loma Linda University program is supervised by a recent graduate of the Loma Linda University Pediatric Dental Residency Program. Matthew Gustaffson has served as the program director for the student group program at Loma Linda University for the past year. Matthew states that this unique position allowed him the ability to get to know the students at Loma Linda University and establish a collegial relationship with those students interested in Pediatric Dentistry.

Matthew has had the opportunity to meet with the students several times over the past year, which allowed him to give them a glimpse of what pediatric dentistry is all about outside of a didactic course. The students that attended the meetings ranged from first-year dental students who were eager to learn about pediatric dentistry to fourth-year senior dental students who were preparing to apply to residency programs in Pediatric Dentistry. Discussions ranged from topics such as, "What is Pediatric Dentistry All About Anyway?" to "How in the World Do I Apply to a Residency Program?"

Matthew was able to share numerous case presentations with the students, ranging from oral sedation cases in trauma to extensive restorative cases involving medically compromised patients treated in the hospital. It allowed him to educate the students about numerous aspects of Pediatric Dentistry and dispel some of the myths that all we do is deal with difficult children all day. The group also reviewed recent articles published in the Journal of Pediatric Dentistry, on topics such as restorative dentistry and access to care.

Matthew states that this past year has been very rewarding for him and for the dental students involved. On numerous occasions while working in the clinic with these students, he had the opportunity for some spontaneous discussions about treatment planning for pediatric patients and how to better manage difficult patients, and even topics such as what job opportunities are available for the pediatric dentist. As a result of the relationship he had with the students, he was able to get the students more involved with Pediatric Dentistry. He is very proud that many students from Loma Linda University have applied to the Pediatric Dentistry Honors Program at their dental school, and he also has students who are using their vacation time this summer to participate in externships. His greatest hope was that these students would pursue their passions, whether that means completing their residency programs or treating children in their general practices. He felt that he had a great impact in introducing and getting students involved in Pediatric Dentistry.

Finally, Matthew wants to thank the CSPD Foundation for their continuous support and he looks forward to being a private practitioner. Stuart Segura, also a second-year Loma Linda Pediatric Dental resident, will now serve as the liaison for the pediatric student group at Loma Linda University.

American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry UCSF Student Chapter

Scott Fishman, Trustee

Scott Fishman CSPDF Trustee

Early in 2007, the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry student chapter of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) was officially granted active chapter membership status by the national organization. Currently, the group has over twenty-five active members from all four dental school classes. The club’s faculty mentor is Dr. Brent Lin (Associate Clinical Professor and Pre-Doctoral Director, Department of Pediatric Dentistry), who provides guidance to the organization, mentorship for students, and a resource for finding faculty volunteers for the organization’s activities. The UCSF student chapter of AAPD is designed to foster and promote interest in pediatric dentistry among the student body and advocate for children’s oral health care in the community. We start off the year with discussions of our mission statement, planned activities for the year, achieved goals, and we assess future needs for the organization. One of the main goals of the organization is to serve as a resource for pre-doctoral students with information about dental externships, research and community service.

UCSF provides a solid pediatric dentistry curriculum for the pre-doctoral students, consisting of a series of didactic instruction, seminars, simulation sessions, laboratory experience, and the patient care activity. The UCSF student chapter of AAPD provides a unique opportunity for students to further explore the field of pediatric dentistry and interact with the community. The group performs a valuable service to underserved San Francisco children and their families. By partnering with organizations such as San Francisco Head Start, The Boys and Girls Club of America and Wu Yee Health Services, their group is able to organize and offer free quarterly dental screenings, education, oral hygiene instruction and products such as tooth brushes, toothpaste and dental floss to the local community. The UCSF student chapter of AAPD has organized several community events in this past school year. An example of such activity for this past summer quarter is the dental screening event in the San Francisco Zoo, sponsored by the Head Start Program.

In addition to community service, selected chapter officers routinely participate in quarterly meetings with the San Francisco Children’s Dental Health Committee. This meeting allows representatives from many of San Francisco’s children’s (dental) public health organizations an opportunity to meet and discuss current issues confronting children’s overall and dental health. Also discussed are issues of resource allocation, new programs, future plans and legislation that may affect health services in the city, region and state. The organization’s officers and members provide leadership in organizing and planning in the school of dentistry’s largest student organized community outreach event for children, Give Kids a Smile Day at UCSF. In February of 2007, this event served over 160 community children by giving free detailed screenings, cleanings, sealants, oral hygiene instruction and supplies all delivered by student and faculty volunteers.

Besides public service, the student group is also designed to serve as a gateway for pre-doctoral dental students who are interested in a specializing in pediatric dentistry. The group organizes a quarterly "Speaker Night" series where local private pediatric dentists, pediatric dental residents, and pediatric dental faculty speak about their personal experience within the field, give advice, and answer questions. The group also supplies information and guidance to dental students who are interested in gaining increased pediatric clinical experience before graduation. Currently, one pediatric dentistry externship, under the directorship of Dr. Brent Lin and Dr. Pamela Alston (Dental Director of the Alameda County Medical Center), is offered for two students per quarter at the Eastmont Wellness Center in Oakland. In this externship program, students gain tremendous experience in infant oral health care, anticipatory guidance, prevention, advanced pediatric dentistry restorative techniques, and behavior management in a community clinic setting. The students are mentored and supervised by UCSF faculty, Dr. Pamela Alston and Dr. Shelby Smith. Further, the UCSF student chapter of the AAPD also connects interested and motivated students with shadowing opportunities with faculty and residents in the UCSF Post-graduate pediatric dental clinic, sedation clinic, ambulatory surgery center, as well as private practice.

They are proud to say that most of our members matriculate into pediatric residency programs after graduation. Those who continue at UCSF remain a valuable resource for dental students as they endeavor to increase the breadth of their knowledge about pediatric dentistry. It is likely that the UCSF student chapter of the AAPD will continue to play an essential role in the adjunctive education of predoctoral dental students and in delivering pediatric dental care to the underserved of San Francisco.

UCLA PEDIATRIC STUDY CLUB

Scott Fishman, Trustee

Scott Fishman CSPDF Trustee

Dr. Clarice Law is the group leader of the UCLA student chapter of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. They have established committees for their group which meet regularly.

The research committee meets quarterly around their brown-bag luncheons. Topics range from examining the relationship between obesity and oral health to caries risk assessment tools. The goal this past fall and winter quarters was to increase the frequency of the opportunities for exposing the students to pediatric dental oral health research and included discussions on evidence-based research materials.

The education committee collaborated with a motivated group of pre-dental educators, called SCOPE, to develop an oral health curriculum to be presented to elementary age school children. Dr. Law states that they are very proud of the module that was developed, which includes topics such as diet and caries, orthodontics, oral piercing, smoking, and injury prevention. This year they plan to implement the curriculum to children ages ten to fourteen in a classroom setting. The members of the committee also worked with pediatric dental residents to develop oral health materials to be used for risk assessment for children under five years of age.

The community service committee just recently volunteered at the Special Olympics in Long Beach on behalf of the UCLA dental students. Dr. Law states that the students had a wonderful time and were grateful for the exposure to children with special needs. Their committee’s goal is to reach out to provide leadership to improve the children’s oral health by collaborating with other student groups in the UCLA community, and they are working in conjunction with the Hispanic Dental Association.

The externship committee provides students with important information regarding the externship process and specific program information. At the end of the 2007 school year, they held an informal Q&A session with a panel of fourth-year applicants who were already accepted into graduate training programs in Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Law states, "The room was packed," so they will be doing this again this year.

Dr. Law concludes that she is extremely appreciative of the CSPD Foundation’s financial support.

Warren Brandli Leadership Intern Program

Download CSPD Warren Brandli Leadership Intern Program Application

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry is accepting applications for the Warren Brandli Leadership Intern Program. Current pediatric dental residents and individuals in their first five years of post-residency residing in California are eligible to apply. This opportunity was created for individuals who are in training programs or in the early stages of their career to participate in the CSPD governance and advocacy activities, attend internal organizational and inter-professional meetings, and complete a project designated by the CSPD Board President by the end of the program.

Through these activities, CSPD hopes to:

  • Familiarize candidates about the specialty, its governance and social and political issues facing pediatric dentistry in the 21st century.
  • Expose new members to the administrative and membership functions of the Society.
  • Inform members of organizational strategies, advocacy and inter-professional relationships not commonly available to pediatric dentists in practice or academics.
  • Prepare members to assume leadership roles in dental specialty governance, particularly within the CSPD and the AAPD governance structures.

Applicants must be willing to attend all regular meetings of the CSPD Board of Directors as well as the Society’s Leadership Orientation Session at the annual meeting and Strategic Planning Session, which is held every third year. Other opportunities may include attendance at the meetings of the Dental Board of California, California legislative hearings, California Dental Association-sponsored advocacy events and community leadership and/or Public Policy Advocate.

The CSPD will arrange transportation and lodging and will cover all program-related administrative costs and supply needs. Selection will be based on the applicant’s 1) completion of an application, 2) submission of a short essay about the candidate’s interest and specific personal goals for the program, 3) relevant activities or roles within their professional sphere and 4) two required letters of reference (one of which should be from the program director if the applicant is a current pediatric dental resident).

Applications are due December 1st, 2007 and selections will be made and announced prior to the next annual session. The internship period will begin with the final meeting of the Board of Directors held in conjunction with the annual session and will finish 12 months later at the final meeting of the next Board of Directors at which time each intern will give a final report about their project.

CSPD Foundation Grants and Awards Update

CSPD Foundation Grants and Awards RFPs

Money Available to Faculty and Student Investigators

"The Foundation is ready to put its money to good use," states Treasurer Ken Szymanski, "I'm ready to write more checks." Szymanski is referring to four categories of grants that have been established to further the goals of fostering research and developing faculty at California's pediatric dental programs. "The CSPD Foundation is foremost concerned with strengthening the Pediatric Dental Programs that exist in California," President Richard Sobel reminds us. "These grants and awards are great starting points and can really help each program."

Two categories of travel awards exist to help either faculty or residents to be able to present their research findings at national or international meetings. Up to $500 is available to help defray travel expenses.

Research grants are now available for up to $20,000 ($10,000 per year for two years). Pediatric dental post-doctoral students or recent grads are eligible for theses awards on topics that will contribute to the knowledge base in Pediatric Dentistry. This Investigator-Initiated Research Grant will initially be funded in January of 2008. Completed proposals are due October 1st for 2007. Inquiries should be directed to the chair of the CSPD Awards and Grants Committee, Steve Blain (steve.b1@cox.net).

In an effort to further assist the state's pediatric dental programs, CSPD has developed the Faculty Development Grant for part-time Pediatric Dental Educators. These grants are designed to facilitate the recruitment and retention of clinicians to teach part-time and may be available to each program annually. The Faculty Development grant will provide a maximum of $5,000 to attract and retain clinicians who desire to be teachers, thereby bringing mid to late career clinicians into the educational system. These grants have deadlines for submission. More detailed information and applications can be obtained from Dr. Steve Blain or from the CSPD office. Complete RFP's, application forms, and additional information is available on the CSPD website via links to CSPDF.

Foundation Challenge Grant Puts Tom Barber Endowed Chair Campaign Over the Top

Mark Lisagor, Trustee

CSPD Foundation Trustee

Nearly two years ago, a group of pediatric dentistry alumni from UCLA began to talk about ways in which they might give back to that program. They felt that the UCLA pediatric dental program was very important to their professional careers. They believed they might provide a means to give back to the program in a manner that would also address the critical shortage of faculty in pediatric dentistry. Furthermore, they believed that Tom Barber was critical to the development of the program and their professional philosophies. They wanted an opportunity to honor Dr. Tom Barber who served as a mentor, friend, and role model for so many in that program.

The alumni launched a fundraising campaign to secure sufficient pledges to fund an endowed chair in pediatric dentistry at UCLA that might be named in honor of Dr. Barber. At the annual session of the CSPD in Seattle on March 30, 2007, the announcement was made that nearly half a million dollars had been pledged by more than 30 alumni and friends. The CSPD Foundation Challenge Grant of an additional $50,000 would put the fundraising campaign past its goal.

The establishment of any new endowed chair at UCLA will, of course, require a lengthy review and approval process by both campus authorities and the UC President. Once approved and fully funded, this endowed chair will enhance the pediatric program’s ability to attract and retain promising new faculty members.

The CSPD Foundation Trustees are hopeful that this successful fundraising effort, supported by its Challenge Grant, will lead to the creation of the first endowed chair in pediatric dentistry in California and may encourage alumni from other pediatric dental programs around the state to launch similar efforts.

Along with an illustrious career as a Professor of Pediatric Dentistry spanning almost fifty years, Tom Barber also served as Acting Dean of the Dental School in 1980-81 and was Associate Dean from 1978-84. An entire generation of pediatric dentistry academicians, mostly now retired or retiring, were inspired to go into teaching by their time at UCLA as students under Dr. Barber’s mentorship.

Much of his early academic career was spent at the University of Illinois, where the Institute for Pediatric Dentistry now bears his name. More recently, and more importantly to Californians, he served as Executive Director of CSPD from 1990 to 1996 and is also a past president.

SUMMARY OF FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES

Madeleine Brandli, Trustee

In 2001 the past presidents of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry contributed more than $30,000 in support of the establishment of the CSPD Foundation to address the critical issues confronting pediatric dentistry in California. The first Board of Trustees identified a fundamental crisis in pediatric dental education resulting from a serious shortage of full time educators and also of private practitioners willing or able to teach at dental schools and hospital programs in the state.

Addressing this crisis became the primary focus of the Foundation and an Inaugural Annual Giving Campaign brought total contributions to $107,000. Donors have contributed more than $675,000 to date in support of the mission and goals of the Foundation. An additional $13,575 has been contributed by individual and corporate sponsors to defray the costs of donor recognition events.

The Foundation began its search for solutions by reaching out to the academic leadership, sponsoring "Consensus Conference: California Pediatric Dental Teaching Crisis." Held in conjunction with the CSPD Annual Session in 2002, this panel discussion included program chairs and departments heads from the five California dental schools and explored the problems facing their respective pediatric dental programs.

Recognizing the importance of continuing its dialog with academicians and clinicians alike, the Foundation surveyed faculty and CSPD members in 2003 to identify possible approaches to the problems. In 2005 department heads and program chairs were interviewed personally to obtain information which led to the creation of various grant and award programs. As the result of the 2007 CSPD Foundation Strategic Planning session, the President of the Foundation has created an Educators and Academicians Advisory committee to engage in ongoing discussions to identify specific actions the Foundation can take to best support the academic community.

Grants and awards have been presented to faculty, post-doctoral residents and in support of pre-doctoral pediatric study groups at all dental schools. In 2003 these grants included $18,000 in funding to researchers studying the strengths of career academician and post-graduate residents, to support mentoring and lecture preparation and to assist in travel for presentations at national and international research conferences.

In subsequent years a Faculty Development grant supported the development of an innovative mentoring program that matched pediatric dental residents with faculty mentors. Funds were also awarded in partial support of a university retreat for the creation of a consensus in teaching methods. In collaboration with CSPD the Foundation provided funds for the development of an online education program, making video continuing education courses available to a large audience.

Currently the Foundation has budgeted funds for the CSPD Foundation Research Award, the CSPD Intern Program, the Investigator Initiated Research Grant, Faculty Development Grants, Student Mentoring and an Academic Chair Challenge Grant, allocations amounting to $78,000.

In addition to grants and awards programs, the Foundation has presented three Continuing Education courses in conjunction with CSPD Annual Sessions. Presenters included Dr. Paula O’Neill, speaking on the subject of mentoring in the academic environment; Dr. Ron Johnson, a respected pediatric dental educator; and Robin Wright, a renowned expert in the field of interpersonal communications. Funds were also granted to pediatric dental residents to assist in travel expenses to attend these courses.

Grants and Awards paid out to date:
CSPD Foundation Research Award $5,000
Faculty Development Grants $25,518
Student Mentoring $10,505
Foundation C.E. Courses $18,842
CSPD Online Education Grant $24,000
Consensus Conference Grant $3,085
TOTAL GRANT & AWARDS $86, 950

The Foundation has invested its corpus conservatively in anticipation of the development of a mature grants and awards structure. As of January 31, 2007, the CSPD Foundation Current Assets total $584,124. Total Net Income to date from all sources is $750,064, less Grants & Awards of $86,950 and Assets of $584,124 = $78,990, the approximate operating expense for the Foundation since its inception. This averages to less than $16,000/ year, an exceptionally low amount for an organization of this size.

In January 2007 the Board of Trustees met in a Strategic Planning session facilitated by Dr. William Cordeiro. That plan lays the groundwork and outlines the Strategic Initiatives that will guide the CSPD Foundation into the next phase of its growth.
