About the Program

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) conducts a Congressional Lobby Day in Washington D.C., annually during the month of March. The purpose of this event is to have our members participate in strengthening the voice of dentistry on behalf of children's oral health at the national level. These advocacy efforts, to place oral health at the forefront for health policy deliberations, are very important for all of us to support. The Lobby Days also serve to continue the relationship -building what is such a critical part of the advocacy and grass roots effort.

The AAPD encourages residents in pediatric programs to attend the Lobby Days and funds hotel and some meal costs. State pediatric dental organizations or residency programs may fund some of the costs to attend as well.

At the June 2011 California Society of Pediatric Dentistry Board of Directors meeting, the board made a commitment to support up to three residents from California to attend the Washington Congressional Lobby Days on a trial basis for the next two years. There is a Call for Applicants annually and the candidates will be selected on a competitive basis through an application process that includes submitting an application, a short C.V. and a personal statement stating why the applicant should be considered and selected. Exit or follow-up interviews will be conducted by the Leadership Development Committee, which has been charged to administer and assess the progress of the program.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a California pediatric dentistry residency program
  • Submit a completed Advocacy Program Application
  • Submit a summary of Curriculum Vitae
  • Submit a Personal Statement of why you would like to be considered
  • A letter of recommendation from your program director in support of attending

Deadline

Deadline is on November 10, 2012 by the end of business day. Look for exact Lobby Dates in the LDC Latest News and the LDC Schedule located on the Leadership Development web page. The decisions of the Leadership Development Committee are final. Notifications will be provided by December 1, 2012.
