BY Dr. Sharine Thenard, CSPD President

My name is Dr. Sharine Thenard. I have served on the CSPD Board of Directors for the past six years and am extremely honored to be serving as your new President. In this role over the next year, I am faced with a number of exciting challenges.

The first is to fill the shoes of our Immediate Past President, Dr. Dennis Nutter, who has led us with a dignified sense of wisdom as a gracious and eloquent leader. He led us through a strategic planning session late last year that resulted in a focused and relevant strategic plan, which we will be following in the upcoming year. I am pleased that he will continue to help the society in the immediate future.

The second challenge is to assist in the transition of our next Executive Director. We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Andy Soderstrom join us as our new Executive Director to replace Dr. Ray Stewart. Ray has been incredible not just for pediatric dentists in the state of California but also for the children of this state. He has been a vocal advocate for children over the past decades and has made us proud over the last eight years while serving as our leader. Ray also has been a wonderful mentor to the pediatric dental residents of California’s training programs. I have no doubt that our new Executive Director, Andy, with his extensive experience in dental volunteer organizations and his established relationships both in the state and across the nation, will also be an outstanding asset, bringing professional strength and credibility to our society. Our focus this year will continue to rest on the children of California, but will also highlight the needs and wants of our members. We have a dynamic group of leaders who are ready to listen to the concerns and desires of our members and will strive to make CSPD even more valuable to our membership. We will also focus on improving communication with you, our members, to let you know what your Society has been working on and the policies and decisions that are being formed on your behalf.
We will continue to foster relationships with other organizations that further the agenda of the profession of dentistry. These include the California Dental Association, AAPD, ADA and child advocacy groups. We understand that the context of delivering oral health care to children is changing and want to make sure we are proactively helping our member pediatric dentists, while still protecting the doctor-patient relationship.

CSPD will continue its relationship with the association management company, Smith Moore & Associates, and I am happy we are doing so. They have helped the society become more organized and modern. I believe they have elevated the quality of programs such as the annual meeting and our publications. I hope you have been as happy with them as we have been.

We are fortunate to continue to have dedicated leadership at the helm of the society. Dr. Dave Okawachi will be my right hand man as incoming president-elect. Dr. Don Schmitt, our incoming treasurer, is focused and clear-headed, and has served as secretary with a sense of logic that is much appreciated. I know that our incoming Secretary Dr. Suzy Tavana, who was one of our Warren Brandli Interns, will be an outstanding secretary, even as she welcomes the arrival of her third child in the past few weeks! I look forward to working with Dr. Jacob Lee, our incoming vice president, whose alternative perspectives and honesty I respect. This group, along with our Immediate Past President, Dr. Dennis Nutter, and new ED, Dr. Andy Soderstrom, is your new Executive Committee, a group who will spend an incredible number of hours serving you and our society. Please extend them a thank you when you can. Their devotion to the profession is commendable.

I also want to thank Dr. Oariona Lowe and Dr. Paul Reggiardo. Ora’s selfless dedication continues to astound me. She is responsible for helping plan this past annual meeting, the fourth under her tenure, and is already planning the next two events in Napa (2016) and Las Vegas (2017). Paul, our Public Policy Advocate, is another great leader. You should know that he attends dozens upon dozens of meetings on our behalf, representing pediatric dentistry at many tables. It is largely due to Paul that our society is so well respected across the state and the nation. His sense of duty to the children and to pediatric dentists is unparalleled and we are extremely lucky to have his experience and expertise.

I also want to take a moment to thank Dr. Lindsey Robinson for being our installing officer at this year’s Annual Meeting Installation Luncheon. Lindsey was the one who first asked me to join the CSPD board a number of years ago. She has been an incredible leader to many and an inspiring mentor to me. She is someone whose advice is taken seriously and in whose footsteps I find myself following.
In closing, I welcome the opportunity to serve you, the pediatric dentists of California, and to lead this society into its next chapter.

Happy 40 years of CSPD. Here’s to 40 more wonderful years!
