As students head back to school and we enjoy our last few weeks of summer weather, let’s reflect on the busy and enjoyable summer we have had. Throughout the summer your leadership team has been working hard for you. I would like to highlight some of our summertime activities.

Planning for our Annual Meeting October 11-14, 2018

As many of you are aware, we have moved our annual meeting from spring to autumn. Please mark your calendar now! Dr. Oariona Lowe, Annual Meeting Chair and Dr. Suzy Tavana, Vice-President and Annual Meeting Event Coordinator, are planning the Annual Meeting to be held in Torrey Pines, October 11-14, 2018. An exciting event is planned to pay tribute to our past Presidents on Friday, October 12. We hope you will join us in recognizing their vision and commitment.

Enhancing Delivery of Information to CSPD Members

With a recommendation from Dr. Roland Hansen, a past President and past Editor, we have formed an Ad Hoc Bulletin Editorial Committee. The members of this committee, Dr. Chanel McCreedy, chair of the Communication Committee, Dr. Angela Lee, Associate Editor, Dr. Nancy Hsieh, past chair of the Communication Committee, and Dr. MyLinh Ngo, Managing Editor, will consult with past editors to identify and implement enhanced means of delivering pertinent information to our members in digital and print forms. With the assistance of Smith Moore and Associates (SMA) design team, we will also explore a fresh layout for the CSPD Bulletin.

Enlisted new Peer Review Committee members

A month ago Dr. Bernard Gross, the chair of the Peer Review Committee, and I discussed perhaps eliminating the Peer Review Committee since it has not functioned for a while. However, Dr. Gross and I agreed that this committee is like a homeowner’s insurance policy. While we hope it is never used, if the need arises it will be there. I welcome the members who have undertaken the CDA calibration process: Drs. Bernard Gross, Evelyne Vu-Tien, Randy Niederkohr and Michael Kleinman.

Initiated Leadership Development and Nomination Committees

The Leadership Development Committee (LDC) and the Nomination Committee perform vital work for our organization. Their task every year is to seek, vet and nominate leaders to serve our organization. We have moved the online application deadline to earlier in the year (to October 1, 2017) to provide sufficient time for the committees to complete their important work. Please consider the invaluable leadership and mentorship you can provide to your organization if members of the LDC and the Nomination Committee reach out to you.

Continued Strong Financial Leadership and Management

Our organization’s finances are in great shape. You can read more in the report by our Treasurer, Dr. Don Schmitt. He ensures that we manage our organization’s funds responsibly. For example, we have four Board of Directors meetings per year. We typically have two meetings in Northern California and two in Southern California to accommodate attendees. Since there are flights involved that can be costly, the Board meeting attendees keep a keen eye on announcements of fare sales and notify each other to maximize timely discounts.

Ensure Financial Transparency

The Audit Committee has been fully engaged with Dr. Eddie So serving as the chair, along with members Drs. Natalie Mansour and Kim Whippy. With the assistance of our Executive Director, Dr. Andy Soderstrom and SMA, they have selected an independent audit firm, who will peruse our financial books to ensure that our procedures meet accounting standards.

Streamlining Board Proceedings

We have formed an Ad Hoc Board Proceedings Committee to standardize our Committee/Officer Report form and assimilate them into our electronic Board reporting system. Dr. Andy Soderstrom, with his experience with the American Dental Association and our President-elect Dr. Jonathon Lee, with his experience with the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, will help us optimize our time and efforts.

The work of the board and committees can be time consuming and we sometimes think about how we could instead be relaxing after a busy day in our practices. However, our involvement allows us to have continued professional and personal growth. We enjoy learning how to problem-solve, learning to agree to disagree with an understanding that at the end of the day, others are just as passionate about our shared profession. These experiences truly enrich our lives.

Important California Legislation Affecting Sedation

Our Public Policy Advocate, Dr. Paul Reggiardo, will elaborate in his report, but we must continually endeavor to be the ultimate voice in this arena. We are but a very small body in the land of the political giants. Regardless, we fight the fight that we can and must win for the sake of our patients.

With the renewed understanding of the political forces at play, I have asked Dr. Nancy Hsieh to develop programs for our Board members to learn how to be strategically engaged within the challenging political climate in California. We will also vigorously cultivate our future leaders who are well-versed in political affairs by having our Santos Cortez legislative interns attend our Board meetings.

CSPD Offers Another Opportunity for Continuing Education on
April 21, 2018

Let’s continually hone our sedation skills. Dr. Suzy Tavana is organizing a spring continuing education meeting to be held on Saturday April 21, 2018, in San Francisco extensively on sedation. See you all there!

What Moves CSPD?

Many dedicated people! In one swift year, I am merely a conductor of this great symphony of talented performers. These individuals bring unique perspectives, generously giving their free time as they strive to uphold and improve our organization. I hope you are as proud and appreciative of them as I am.

Respectfully submitted,
Jacob K. Lee, DDS
President, CSPD
