COVID-19 Pandemic Membership Advisory
Week in Review

As we continue to deal with the voluntary suspension of all but essential dental services, on Thursday California Governor Newsom issued a directive further restricting social, professional and business interactions throughout the state. How this mandate directly affects dental practice delivery and how it might or must be implemented gets clearer each day. Here are the many resources available at this time.

1)     At the state level:

a)    CDA updated its recommendations on Friday evening and now urges  dentists to provide emergency treatment only to align with the statewide shelter in place order.

b)     To understand and navigate some of these practice delivery nuances visit the CDA website

c)      CDA offered a webinar Friday regarding legal and personnel issues associated with owning or managing a dental practice during COVID-19 interruptions and office closures. The speaker was Ali Oromchian, Esq., who presented at our annual meeting this month in San Francisco, and the recording is available on the CDA website.

2)     At the national level:

a)     The American Dental Association (ADA)  issued guidance on Thursday to dentists in determining what constitutes emergency dental care.

b)     ADA hosted a Friday webinar on COVID-19 Infection Control Protocols and Procedures.

c)      The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) is regularly updating its COVID-19 pediatric practice recommendations.

As we sit with more idle time, many of our members are asking what we can do to help.

1)     TAKE ACTION TODAY - With the economic uncertainties of practice closures, we want to plan for the recovery of our small businesses and offices. There is federal economic relief legislation (HR 6201) that will play a significant role and dentistry should be included in any COVID-19 stimulus package. The ADA and the AAPD are requesting that you take action today by asking your Senators and Representative to include programs aimed at helping dentistry in any COVID-19 relief legislation.

2)     As you are aware, personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks or gowns are in great need by our medical colleagues. The shortage is severe and the California Chapters of the American Academy of Pediatrics and local pediatricians have requested our help. Local hospitals and acute care facilities are willing to accept PPE donations. Your local component dental society, pediatric colleagues, or hospitals can direct you in this regard.

Regarding our recent annual session, CSPD has received no reports of anyone present having been diagnosed, tested positive, or exhibited signs of COVID-19 illness at, or subsequent to, the meeting.

Finally, and most importantly, in these very uncertain times, if you are experiencing personal or professional stress or anxiety, reach out to colleagues and share your concerns and apprehensions. Our mental health is important and our support of each other is paramount. We are all in this together and together we will emerge stronger.
