Vision Statement

To Enhance Pediatric Dentistry Education at All Levels

Mission Statement

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation is a charitable foundation and catalyst to advance the oral health of all California infants, children, adolescents, and those with special health care needs.

History and Purpose

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation, established in 2001, is the charitable, non-profit partner to CSPD. The Foundation raises funds to support efforts at improving education in pediatric dentistry in California at every level. We support research, leadership development, faculty recruitment and retention, program enrichment, and various education efforts by the CSPD.

During each annual session since 1986, the past presidents of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry have met in order to offer suggestions and perspectives for the current leadership of CSPD. In the mid to late ‘90’s the idea of creating a foundation to meet certain goals of the CSPD membership was proposed by some of our past presidents. At the 2000 CSPD meeting in Dana Point, the past presidents very generously pledged to financially support and gave the initial funding to establish a CSPD Foundation.

The CSPDF was officially incorporated as a Foundation on March 12, 2001.

The CSPDF had its first official meeting in Sacramento on March 30, 2001. At that time a Mission Statement was adopted and it has since acted as the guiding light from which a strategic plan has been generated. Prior to a formal strategic plan, The Foundation Board proposed the following areas of interest:

  1. Have an advocacy role in supporting education, research and service.
  2. Network with other individuals, groups and organizations.
  3. Improve access to care with pediatric dentists as the gatekeepers.
  4. Assist the CSPD membership, acting as a conduit for the dissemination of clinical and technical advances in pediatric dentistry.
  5. Enhance workforce issues, aiding in increasing the number of educationally qualified pediatric dentists.
  6. Support efforts of training programs in providing the best quality of education with facilities to match and adequate faculty to accomplish our goals.

Beginning in 2002, the CSPDF has organized and sponsored a Thursday afternoon lecture/seminar included in the CSPD annual meeting with the intention of focusing on the crisis in pediatric dental education. It was and is the goals of this series of lectures to make CSPD membership aware of the crisis, to encourage current residents to consider education as a full time or part time career choice and to encourage the CSPD membership to become volunteer part time educators at one of the pediatric dental programs in California.

CSPDF currently funds the table clinic awards given to participants (mostly residents) at the CSPD annual meetings.

CSPDF had funded numerous grant requests by pediatric dental graduate students with the ultimate goal of creating a mutually rewarding mentorship environment between the graduate student and educators.

The acceptance of the CSPDF by the membership of the CSPD has been tremendous. CSPDF has received donations in excess of $1,500,000 from CSPD members and corporate sponsors.

What started as a suggestion from a few past presidents of CSPD has become a reality and continues to grow. The Board of Directors of the CSPD Foundation continue to fulfill the dictates of our strategic plan in order to meet the purpose of the Foundation as outlined in our Mission Statement: “ support and promote education, research, service and policy development that advance the oral health of infants and children, through adolescence, including all individuals with special health care needs.”
