CSPD Membership Categories

Active
An applicant for Active membership shall be a member of, or an applicant to, the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry; has met the advanced education requirements of the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the United States or Canada for the ethical announcement of practice as a pediatric dentist; and shall be in active practice, teaching, dental administration, research or military service. Active members enjoy all membership privileges, including voting on all issues brought before the annual Business Meeting, holding elective office and serving on committees, and receiving membership publications including the CSPD Bulletin.

Affiliate
This category of membership is available to general dentists in the United States and Canada, who, at the time of application, are members of the American or Canadian Dental Associations. Affiliate members may not use the Society name, membership status or logo, nor imply special expertise or training in pediatric dentistry. Affiliate members may not hold elective office nor vote on issues before the annual Business Meeting.

Life
Active and Affiliate members who have maintained membership in good standing for a total of 30 years, not counting student or residency years, and have reached 65 years of age or greater, are eligible to apply for this classification. Life Members may be either Active or Retired. Members who have left practice or related dental careers secondary to permanent disability and fulfill all other criteria except membership tenure or age, may, upon application, be granted this membership designation. Active Life members who previously held Active membership continue to enjoy all Active member privileges.

Associate
Associate membership is available to dentists educationally qualified in one of the other dental specialty areas recognized by the American Dental Association and to pediatricians and other physicians maintaining good standing in their professional organizations. Associate members may not use the Society name, membership status or logo, nor imply special expertise or training in pediatric dentistry. Associate members may not vote nor hold elective office.

International
International membership is available to dentists living and professionally operating outside of the United States and Canada who maintain membership in good standing in their recognized foreign dental association or specialty organization. International members may not vote, serve as other than consultants to committees, nor hold elective office. Educationally qualified pediatric dentists otherwise eligible for Active membership, excluding those in active military service, living and working outside of the United States and Canada, are also eligible for this membership category, but without the privileges of Active membership.

Retired
Retired membership status, upon application to the Society, may be granted to Active, Associate and Affiliate members completely retired from dental practice, teaching, research or administration and who have maintained at least 15 years of good standing in their respective membership category. Those members engaged in part-time practice, teaching, research or in a dental administrative capacity for which remuneration is received are ineligible for the category. Retired members may not vote, hold elective office, or serve as other than consultants to committees. In the event a Retired member resumes practice, research, teaching or administration, it is incumbent on that member to notify the Society for reinstatement to the correct membership category.

Inactive
This membership category is reserved for members who were previously Active, Affiliate, or Associate members, who receive no income from dentistry, and do not meet the minimum years of membership to qualify for retired status, but desire to maintain as association with the Society. A member must apply annually to maintain this membership classification. Inactive members may serve on committees, but not vote or hold elective office.

Predoctoral Student
This category of membership is available to predoctoral students enrolled in an educational program in dentistry approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the United States or Canada. Predoctoral student privileges include attending the annual business meeting of the Society and receiving all general membership communications and publications. Predoctoral Student membership terminates on July 1 following completion of the individual’s educational program.

Postdoctoral Student
This category of membership is available to postdoctoral students enrolled in an educational program in pediatric dentistry approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the United States or Canada. Postdoctoral student members may attend the annual business meeting of the Society, serve as consultants to committees, but not vote or hold elective office. Postdoctoral Student membership terminates on completion of the individual’s education program but may be converted without application fee to Active membership upon request. First year graduates pay no dues and dues are reduced 50% the second year of active membership.

International Student
This category of membership is available to all students enrolled in any educational program in dentistry or pediatric dental training in a country other than the United States or Canada approved by a national organization comparable to the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the United States or Canada. International Students may serve as consultants to committees, but not vote nor hold elective office. International Student membership terminates on completion of the educational program, but, upon application, may be converted to International membership. Privileges are identical to that of the Postdoctoral Student.

Allied
Dental and other allied health professionals, including but not limited to dental hygienists, dental assistants, physician assistants and nurses, whose interests are consistent with the mission of CSPD, are eligible for this membership category. Allied members may not use the Society name, membership status, or logo, nor imply special expertise or training in pediatric dentistry.

Friends of Pediatric Dentistry
Individuals who do not qualify for other membership categories, but whose interests are consistent with the mission of CSPD, are eligible for this membership category. Friends receive copies of CSPD communications and publications, including the Bulletin and may not use the Society name, membership status, or logo, nor imply special expertise or training in pediatric dentistry.

Honorary
Honorary members are elected to this membership category for unusual or outstanding contribution to the profession and/or the specialty of pediatric dentistry by a vote of the membership. Honorary members have the same privileges as Active members, except the right to vote or hold elective office.

***Full-Time Faculty Active Membership
