About the Santos Cortez Graduate Student Legislative Advocacy (GSLA) Program
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) conducts a Congressional Lobby Day (Public Policy and Advocacy Conference) in Washington D.C., annually during the month of March. The purpose of this event is to have our members participate in strengthening the voice of dentistry on behalf of children's oral health at the national level. These advocacy efforts, to place oral health at the forefront for health policy deliberations, are very important for all of us to support. The Lobby Days also serve to continue the relationship -building what is such a critical part of the advocacy and grass roots effort.
The AAPD encourages residents in pediatric programs to attend the Lobby Days and funds hotel and some meal costs. State pediatric dental organizations or residency programs may fund some of the costs to attend as well.
A similar Advocacy Conference is planned in collaboration with the California Dental Association. In collaboration with CDA, the one-day conference will provide advocacy instruction for the Graduate Student Legislative and Advocacy (GSLA) Interns.
At the June 2011 California Society of Pediatric Dentistry Board of Directors meeting, the board made a commitment to support up to three residents from California to attend the Washington Congressional Lobby Days on a trial basis for the next two years. In 2013, the board of directors voted to continue to support the program. There is a Call for Applicants annually and the candidates will be selected on a competitive basis through an application process that includes submitting an application, a short C.V. and a personal statement stating why the applicant should be considered and selected. Exit or follow-up interviews will be conducted by the Leadership Development Committee, which has been charged to administer and assess the progress of the program.
Applications are due by close of business Thursday, November 10, 2016.
